Physical Therapy for Diabetes | Beneficial for Diabetics?

Physical Therapy for Diabetes may be something to consider. It’s unfortunate that many people with diabetes haven’t exercised and that leads to poor blood glucose numbers and possibly physical therapy. This doesn’t have to happen. Therapy can be avoided even with diabetes if you just exercise 20-30 minutes a day. You don’t want physical therapy, but let’s see how it can help.

  1. Another article with information that is totally new to me, despite being in healthcare! I had no idea that physical therapy had a role in managing diabetes. But the reasons and modalities all make perfect sense. I’m looking forward to chatting with my PT friends to see if they have helped patients with diabetes. Thanks!

I’m glad that you enjoyed it πŸ™‚ When you have diabetes, you want to learn everything about it.

When you’ve tried many things with no results, you’ll look for other ways to keep trying.

With physical therapy, you’ll want your doctor to evaluate and possibly refer you to a physical therapist.

It may not work for everyone, but it can help with some diabetics.

I hope it works out for you. Thank you for sharing πŸ™‚

    • Hi Parveen,

I’m glad you enjoyed my article! I’m also sorry to hear that your grandfather is suffering from diabetes.

But the fact is that physical therapy can help a great many things including diabetes.

Getting into a physical therapy program may just be what some folks with diabetes may need.

Of course diabetics still need to eat right and exercise because that’s the biggest issue with diabetes.

I do hope your grandfather benefits from this.

      Thanks for your feedback πŸ™‚

  3. I believe you have provided sound advice on why physical therapy and exercise is very beneficial if you are suffering from type 2 diabetes. It believe diabetes is a special condition and having assistance in any effort to engage in physical activity should not be done alone. Furthermore, I believe you shouldn’t undertake any type of exercise that would over exert the body, it is too dangerous. I believe walking and yoga are excellent recommendations for people with type 2 diabetes.

Exercise and physical therapy can be very beneficial for helping with diabetes.

Sometimes exercise enough might not be enough and that’s where physical therapy can help.

And you should be under the care of a healthcare provider.

  4. For a while I did think I was diabetic because I was absorbing too much sugar and not doing enough exercise. This post as highlighted some great ways for you to not only prevent diabetes but to manage it and getting plenty of physical exercise is very important to doing just that.

I will have to take on board some of the points you have made as I don’t want to develop it myself so it looks like I must keep myself as active as possible.

    Thanks,

    • Hey Joshua,

You should be careful as to not develop diabetes. Too much sugar and a lack of exercise could put you at risk.

There are many ways to treat diabetes. Physical therapy is one that can help sometimes with diabetics.

Certain exercises can help and a physical therapist can treat you in a positive way. I had physical therapy for my neuropathy in my feet from my diabetes and it did help.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Avoid diabetes at any cost!

      Appreciate your feedback. Thanks πŸ™‚

  5. Diabetic patients needs to take good exercise with a maximum range of 30-40mins but this also leads to poor blood glucose. As a diabetic patient if you exercise daily 30-40min you don’t need a physical therapy. The actual goal of this is to get you fit and things will get so easy for you.

    • Everyone needs exercise and it doesn’t have to be a long workout each day. I agree that a half an hour a day is sufficient and would be enough to keep your blood sugars down.

Exercising each day may or may not require physical therapy. Each person would have to be evaluated for their particular situation.

Physical therapy would be the decision of your physician and would require a script and referral. The best thing is to control diabetes the natural ways with diet and exercise.

Thank you for your insight πŸ™‚

From what I can see you have a type 2 diabetes, really sorry about that. It’s good you’re sharing valuable information on how to treat diabetes. Diabetes can be a difficult disease to manage, but physical therapy can help. Patients can manage blood sugar levels, diabetic symptoms like neuropathy, and pain through exercise. Physical conditioning and thus conditions like metabolic syndrome can also improve with a physical therapy program. Good luck Rob.

    • Hey Patrick,

Yes I do have type 2 diabetes. When I was diagnosed I wanted to learn everything I could about how to live with diabetes.

And I have learned a lot which is why I want to pass on my information to help others.

Exercise is great, but physical therapy can also help some with diabetes. When it comes to diabetes, any kind of movement is going to help the issue.

I have neuropathy from the diabetes and physical therapy helps with circulation and that is good for my feet with the neuropathy.

      Appreciate your feedback, Thanks πŸ™‚

  7. A lot of excellent points here, especially that some people might not feel confident about exercising on their own. At least with physical therapy, it’s in a private and controlled space. In turn, diabetics will probably feel more encouraged to stick with an exercise regime. I think most diabetics could improve their condition by seeing a physical therapist on a regular basis.

    • Hey Nate,

I totally agree with you. I don’t think too many people would exercise on their own.

With physical therapy, you’re in a specific area that is controlled.

It does make folks with diabetes feel better when doing physical therapy.

For some, physical therapy is a positive choice for their diabetes.

I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you πŸ™‚

  8. Hello, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. Losing less than 1 gram of fat from the pancreas through diet can re-start the normal production of insulin, reversing type 2 diabetes. This reversal of diabetes remains possible for at least 10 years after the onset of the condition. That’s my opinion, thank you.

Weight loss and exercise are the two best things you can do for treating diabetes. But sometimes something such as physical therapy can help as well.

The treatment look likes relaxation or assists the patient to carry out the safe exercise with doctor’s advice. Am I right?  It looks great to me.

Some photos inserted does not look like treatment for diabetic patients. Most patients in the photo look young and very healthy. If it is the right photos, I have no objection.

Physical therapy should be suggested by your doctor if needed. There are many exercises for many different situations. A physical therapist will know just what exercises are right for each patient.

As far as the person in the image getting physical therapy? Are you aware that diabetes does not discriminate and people of all ages can develop diabetes so age is not a factor.

  12. Wonderful information on how physical therapy for diabetes can benefit the diabetic in their exercise routine. This is an article I need to share with my friend. I have been trying to tell her that she needs to exercise, even if it is to just take a short walk, but she doesn’t feel safe. Having a physical therapist help would be of great benefit and I am pretty sure that her medicaid insurance would cover it. Does she need a prescription from her doctor to start physical therapy?

    • Hey Robert,

Thank you! Exercise is crucial for good health even without diabetes. But it really can help to lower blood sugars and keep diabetes under control.

Walking is the easiest exercise for anyone, but sometimes it isn’t the right time or place.

Physical therapy can be a big help for diabetes and medical insurance should cover it as long as a doctor writes prescribes it first.

Whatever it takes to control your blood sugars is worth it.

I appreciate your feedback. Thanks! πŸ™‚
