Are Lentils Good for Diabetics? | List of 17 Tips about Lentils

Are Lentils Good for Diabetics? Flat out, lentils help to regulate your blood sugar and improve your glycemic control. Diabetes control depends on factors such as these. It’s important for your health to do everything you can to control your diabetes and lentils are very healthy for you, but especially for diabetics. So, are lentils good for diabetics? Let’s find out the 17 benefits of lentils, shall we?

How Healthy are Lentils for Diabetes?

Lentils

Lentils have a low glycemic index of less than 55 and they can help to lower your blood sugar levels. If you are a type 2 diabetic, then lentils are recommended as part of your diet not only because of their low glycemic index but also because the fiber in lentils can help in slowing down the absorption of sugar in your blood.

This is a super food that can help the development of diabetes by preventing hyperglycemia or high blood sugar.

So lentils can help to stabilize your blood sugar because they are full of complex carbohydrates. They can also aid in controlling your cholesterol levels and your appetite as well. But lentils can actually help you in lowering your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Now I mentioned the glycemic index of lentils and they have a GI value of less than 55. But the actual range is between 18 and 52 and this is because it depends on how you prepare the lentils and which type you have. Green lentils that are canned have a higher glycemic index. Red lentils that are boiled tend to have a much lower GI.

An example of how lentils can lower your blood sugar is from research done in 2008 where people replaced eating 20 grams of cheese and 30 grams of bread in their diets daily with 5 grams of canola oil and 50 grams of lentils.

They succeeded in lowering not only their cholesterol levels but also their fasting blood sugar levels. So the conclusion was that foods with high GI’s that are replaced with low GI foods can be beneficial for lowering your blood sugars.

Lentils can help to stabilize blood sugar numbers and here’s why. They are rich in fiber and have high amounts of magnesium which is beneficial in the flowing of oxygen and blood which results in a lower risk of heart problems. And as a complex carbohydrate they add more to controlling blood glucose levels.

Actually, soybeans are loaded with protein, but lentils contain even more with over 50 grams of protein on one cup! Replace  foods rich in carbohydrates with at least one serving a day of legumes such as lentils.

So what else do lentils have that are ultra healthy? They are packed with fiber, protein, and low in fat which cuts down the risk of heart disease big time. Lentils also have potassium, phosphorous, folate, and iron and that’s definitely healthy for you. They also are able to help control your risk of cancer in addition to being low on the glycemic index scale.

Healthy Legumes

When comparing whole wheat products to legumes, it’s all about the glycemic index numbers and consuming legumes such as lentils is much better at lowering your blood glucose levels than what whole wheat products can do.

Recent studies have revealed that having a high consumption of legumes such as peanuts, chickpeas, beans, alfalfa, and of course lentils can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 33%!

Additional Facts About Lentils

Lentils are seeds belonging to the legume family that are basically two halves in a husk that covers them. Lentils have been a food source for over thousands of years. They are considered a great source of protein without a huge cost. They also are an awesome provider of minerals and vitamins as well as being a source rich in amino acids such as lysine and isoleucine. I love lentils and eat them regularly.

Popular Lentils are:

  • French green lentils
  • Kidney beans
  • Black lentils
  • Soya beans

  1. Wow, I have always heard that lentils are great for you, but I didn’t realize that they were also great for combating diabetes. My dad was recently diagnosed with diabetes and we have been looking for natural ways to help him. I am really glad to hear that lentils help to reduce inflammation as well. I don’t know if this is off topic, but is diabetes hereditary? If so, maybe I need to incorporate lentils into my diet as well. I was already considering my back problems and have been trying to incorporate more anti-inflammatory foods into my diet because of that. Well, I am really glad I stumbled upon this article, it has been very helpful and super informative. I will poke around and see what else I can find on your site.

Reducing inflammation is HUGE! Not just with diabetes, but with many ailments. Lentils are excellent for reducing inflammation.

Diabetes can be hereditary unfortunately. That isn’t something you can do anything about.

      I hope this helps!

  3. Great information. I was aware that lentils are healthy but didn’t have an idea that it can also be helpful in controlling glycemic level. My family has a history of diabetes so I want to eat healthy as prevention is better than cure. I really like kidney beans and sometimes I boil it and munch it as a snack. I was wondering which lentils you prefer?
I would definitely recommend your article to my family members so that they also understand the benefits of lentils and include more in their diet.

    • Hey Chloe, Thanks. Lentils are helpful for diabetes and blood sugars and that’s important because I don’t like medications.

Anything that’s natural that helps to lower blood sugars is what I look for. And you’re right, prevention is much better than cure, especially when it’s in the family history.

I like most kinds of beans but my favorite lentils are the brown lentils. I just always preferred them over the others myself.

I would appreciate you forwarding this article to others to help them too.

      Thank you for your thoughts!
