I have not read prior to this anything about the emotional side of the diabetes diagnosis.  I know this is sure to be a difficult part of getting a handle on the whole treatment plan for the patient.  Knowing that you must pay so much attention to the parts of life you have been just ignoring or sailing through with no thought is hard to get your mind around.  I had never considered the guilt part of this adjustment process.

    As someone who has this problem, do you think it can be controlled to the point that you can do this automatically?  How long did it take you to get this all sorted in your mind?  The exercise you suggest is also interesting as I have only heard about walking and swimming as good exercises.  I know that having a regular exercise plan is difficult.  I can not imagine if you are emotionally upset as well.  Thank you for this side of the picture.

      I don’t think that people address the emotional side of diabetes anywhere as much as the physical aspect of the disease.

      We know that high blood sugar is the culprit. That’s where it begins.

      But it’s all about eating the wrong foods and not enough exercise. That’s where I feel the emotional side comes into play.

      Changing your attitude and thought process along with specific and regular exercise can help control the emotional part of it I believe.

      I agree that swimming and walking are without a doubt the best exercise you can do.

  2. I had no idea. I mean, when I think about it now, it makes perfect sense. But I guess it’s one of those things that you don’t really realize until someone points that out to you.

    Overall, I wholeheartedly loved the breakdown of those emotional aspects. Thank you for taking us through and sharing tips on coping strategies. I appreciate it.

    Also, I just wanted to emphasize that I feel you couldn’t be more right about that attitude part. It’s all how you look at it. Negative thinking definitely works. And it creates a negative impact. It, indeed, cripples people regardless be it Type 2 Diabetes or any other problem imaginable in life. But there’s also a positive approach. Which can help.       I agree. I don’t think that a lot of diabetics think about the emotional aspect of what they are going through sometimes.

      When depression and other emotions come into play, then it’s time to take a step back and try and figure out what’s going on.

      A lot of it has to do with attitude. You’re 100% right. A positive attitude is going to help you go in the right direction. There’s no doubt about that.

      Negative attitude brings you further down. Attitude is everything. We as diabetics, just have to make sure that it’s the RIGHT and positive attitude!
