If you have Type 2 diabetes, then it does not mean that you can’t whip up delicious or homemade food. By knowing about some of the basics of meal planning one can easily make almost any recipe work. Some of the important things that one must consider while making food for diabetic patient are as follows:

This is because solid fats often comprise saturated fats and trans fats.  In case you are making some dish that calls for solid fat like lard, hydrogenated shortening, or butter, then try trans-fat free margarine, shortening, or spreads instead.

The liquid fats i.e. canola, olive, grape seed, corn, and more can be healthy when used in reasonable amounts. Some oils have stronger flavors so always select the one according to your taste and requirement.

2) Take Proper Account of Carbohydrates – Always consider selecting the food items that give you energy and strength.  In case you are making some recipe that calls for “white” rice, “white” flour, or other refined grains, then try substituting it with grain products.

Make use of ground nuts such as hazelnut or almond as it contains a good ratio of carbohydrates and is great for diabetic patients. One can also mix numerous of these whole-grain ingredients for added carbohydrates in the same recipe.

Instead of using whole milk or half-and-half, consider using skim milk, nonfat half-and-half, or evaporated skim milk for lower fats. Similarly, instead of using sour cream, consider using nonfat or low-fat plain buttermilk, or yogurt.

Too Much Sugar

4) Avoid Sugar – If you are making food for a diabetic patient then try to use all-natural and healthy ingredients. Avoid adding a large amount of sugar in your dish as sugar swiftly lift your blood sugar level, contrasting the carbs from starches or vegetables, which are engrossed more slowly. One can easily cut the amount of sugar devoid of seriously affecting texture or taste.

5) Make Experiments – Use ingredients other than salt, fat, and sugar to gratify your taste buds. Consider trying out different herbs, mustards, vinegar, and spices. There are a large number of spices that have different health benefits of their own e.g. cinnamon can help in lowering down blood sugar levels. One can also cut the quantity of salt in a recipe, except the recipe includes yeast as such dish requires salt for rising.
