*Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)- Benfotiamine is the fat soluble form that helps to protect your eyes, nerves, and limbs and prevents circulation problems in people with diabetes. Food sources: Whole grain products, black beans, tuna, breakfast cereals, wheat germ, and mussels.

*Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)- This particular vitamin is not positively known to have an effect on diabetes directly. But a most powerful antioxidant called Glutathione gets help and support from riboflavin. In addition vitamin B2 is required for helping the production of red blood cells and growth, converting food into energy for your body, and helping to keep your skin, eyes, and nervous system healthy.

Food sources: Fortified breakfast cereals, almonds, clams, milk and dairy products. I love my cereal in the morning and I get the vitamins I need!

Vitamin B3 Foods

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)- Aids in improving insulin sensitivity for your body. It helps convert food into much needed energy, helps you with the functioning of your skin, and nervous and digestive systems. Niacin is also beneficial for the production of your stress and sex hormones and also aids in making and repairing DNA.

Food sources: Rice, turkey, beef, fish, eggs, nuts, and milk and dairy products

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)- This is believed to help diabetics with tingling, burning, or numbness sensations in the feet and hands(neuropathy). It’s necessary for producing red blood cells and chlolesterol and breaks down carbohydrates and fats into energy. And it is also useful in producing stress and sex hormones as vitamin B3 does.

Food sources: Avocado, poultry, eggs, mushrooms, broccoli, legumes, and kale.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)- B6 is beneficial for the prevention of damage to your nerves, maintaining your mood which occurs neurotransmitters, hemoglobin, and hormones and protecting the health of your eyes and aiding in your brain functions and developments and immune functions. The other critical issue is that a high dosage of vitamin B12 in a diabetic with kidney disease is dangerous which is why you want to discuss this with your doctor first. He or she is the professional who can guide you properly.

Health Benefits of Vitamin B

  1. Helps with digestion issues- It’s vital that the food you eat gets digested appropriately. Vitamin B gets this done by breaking down fats, protein, and carbs and it does this because of the Hydrochloric acid that it produces. Without it liver and kidney failure can occur because the nutrients will build up inside your body. Make sure you get the right amount of “B” everyday.
  2. Goodbye toxins- Vitamin B3 or niacin, is extremely helpful in flushing out unwanted chemicals and getting rid of toxins from your body and this is important for your health. It produces sex hormones by the adrenal gland and will work hard to mend any DNA damage.
  3. Pick me up- If you’re feeling lazy and fatigued then vitamin B3 will pick you up by boosting your energy levels. It will convert the carbohydrates into glucose and then with the help of vitamin B it will get converted into energy.
  4. Stress reliever- Vitamin B is absolutely necessary for relaxing your mind and calming you when you are stressed out. It also puts a leash on anxiety, migraines, depression, and is beneficial for improving your memory.
  5. Healthy skin- Your skin is your largest organ and the only one that’s visible to everyone so it’s important for it to look great. Vitamin B promotes healthy skin by speeding up your cell metabolism. Research showed that the vitamin is beneficial for your skin whether through your diet or applied topically.
  6. Best hair care- So the B vitamins can help with your hair? They can aid in hair loss if you have that problem. They will help you with shiny and thick hair and thiamine is beneficial for helping to improve the circulation of your scalp. This accelerates the growth process and delivers oxygen to the hair follicles. You don’t want your hair to become thin and dull or brittle. Vitamin B can help you in avoiding this.
  7. Prevents anemia- Vitamin B9 (folate) helps with promoting red blood cells and helps in the prevention against anemia. But it is also extremely important for women during pregnancy because it protects against specific birth defects and helps to promote healthy fetal development.

  8. Neutralizes the aging process- Vitamin B and B1 specifically is the antioxidant which is helpful with increasing blood circulation. It protects you from not only the effects of normal aging, but from alcohol consumption and smoking.
  9. Growth of cells- Vitamins B7 and B9 help in maintaining a healthy blood glucose level, they aid in producing fatty acids and help with the developing of cell growth and making new cells. Certain B vitamins are responsible for burning fat and providing glucose for energy.

  1. Good afternoon Rob,

As long as we are healthy we kind of take it for granted. Then comes the day when it goes wrong and you realize something has to happen. We are put with our nose on the fact that we should have treated our body a little bit better. I think the modern human does not have it easy as we are surrounded by bad air, drinking water is often polluted, then we stuff ourselves with man-made foods which are no good.
You are right in pointing out the big importance of the different Vit B.s have in our diet. The trick is to keep a good balance, eat natural foods and do some exercises.
It is the same as with a car, bad maintenance and bad petrol will not make your car last for long. Diabetes is on the rise in our society and that is not a good sign. Your article explains very well why one should take care of taking the right amount of Vit B.

    • Hello Taetske,

I’m sure that a great many people take their health for granted until something goes wrong as you pointed out.

And yes we abuse our bodies and eat the wrong foods and don’t get enough exercise.

Obviously some things are not in our control.

But Getting enough vitamin B in our diet is in our control. It’s just so important especially with diabetes and neuropathy.

It’s time to tune our bodies up with vitamin B’s!

      Thanks for your comments!

      Cheers!

  2. Hi Rob!
Diabetes is something that runs in my family – a good fraction of my family has it and we are all (most of us) vegetarians. We find it somewhat difficult to obtain our Vitamin B12 intake. However, as you’ve stated, the benefits to B12 are numerous. Can you please recommend some good supplements without gelatin?

    • Hi Janani 🙂

Diabetes runs in many families and it’s something you have to be on the lookout for.

It’s always best to get your vitamins from food but sometimes that can be difficult to do and you have to resort to supplements.

  3. Let’s face it. Diabetes is a tough disease and although I’m not diabetic I have a husband, brother and sister-in-law with it so I’m always searching the web for anything related to diabetes. This article validates what I’ve read elsewhere from reputable sources that the B vitamins and B-12 in particular must be incorporated into the diet be it by food or supplements.

    • Hey Lynn,

Diabetes is a tough disease and one that can be lived with when controlled.

As for your family members, Vitamin B’s are vital for your health and possibly avoiding diabetes and most noteworthy neuropathy. I know because I have neuropathy and I am currently taking a vitamin B complex supplement.

It is better however to get your B vitamins from foods first. Vitamin B12 is extremely important!

I hope this helps you. Thanks for commenting.

      Cheers!

  4. Hello! Very informative article! I learned a lot from it. Thank you for sharing!
Sorry I might misunderstood, you mentioned that taking B6, 9, and 12 together might actually make the condition worse. But most B-complex supplements have all 3 of these. Should we only take B-12 specific supplement and try to get other B vitamins from the diet? Are there companies that make B-complex supplement specifically formulated for diabetes patients?

    Thank you!

    Reply
    • Hi Kai,

Thank you for saying so. Vitamin B is very important especially to avoid neuropathy.

I mentioned taking B6, 9, and 12 together would affect your magnesium levels and that you may want to take a magnesium supplement to rectify this.

It’s better to get all of your B vitamins from food first. As far as companies that make B-complex vitamins for diabetes patients? In my opinion any B-complex vitamin will do for diabetics or anyone for that matter.

But check with your doctor to be sure.

      Thank you!

  5. I notice that the food sources mentioned for vitamin B12 are all animal products. Does that mean that there are no plant foods in which B12 can be found? If animals who eat predominantly vegetation gets this vitamin from the digestion of their food, isn’t it possible that there are foods out there in which we – humans will get this most important vitamin?

    Reply
    • Hey Russell,

Most of vitamin B12 will be found in animal products. There aren’t really any plant based foods that contain vitamin B12.

But you can still get vitamin B12 from supplements which is what I do. It’s that important to have.

All B vitamins are important but B12 especially is. You don’t want to be deficient in vitamin B12!

      Thanks for your input!
