Is Vitamin C Good for Diabetics?- 18 Benefits of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is extremely important for preventing diabetes and aiding diabetics. But just how Is Vitamin C Good For Diabetics? It can lower your risk of diabetes by 62% in you have adequate levels of it. There have been studies done that revealed that having an intake combination of vitamin C and insulin can help to prevent blood vessel damage that is diabetes induced. This is excellent news!

Why is this Vitamin from the Sun so Important?

Oranges with Vitamin C

This is what vitamin C can do to help: Your cells have memory which continue to allow damage occur even after your blood sugar is brought to a controlled level. But vitamin C aids in the restoration of the cells by erasing this “memory.” The result of this coming to a “dead end” is that it will prevent any complications of your kidneys, your heart, and your eyes.

Studies were performed that revealed a connection between a higher risk of diabetes and low levels of vitamin C. This particular study was done with about 80,000 women, with a small 2% who had diabetes over a period of sixteen years.

When the patients were taking a minimum of 400 mg of vitamin C, there were substantial declines in both coronary heart disease that was fatal and non fatal that showed up in each group of the women participating who had diabetes and also who did not have diabetes.

If you happen to be someone who has type 2 diabetes, you have higher levels of oxidative stress and this of course is due to higher blood sugar levels. This makes it a necessity to have more vitamin C because it is an oxidant that is potent. It’s been found that people with diabetes will have insufficient levels of vitamin C. By making sure that your levels are higher will result in decreased blood sugar and lower A1C levels.

Poor blood sugar management and diabetes leads to nerve cell damage and damage to your blood vessels. One of the only ways that you can prevent this is to control and maintain healthy glucose levels. Research recently revealed that you can prevent damage to your blood vessels if you’re type 1 diabetic and you combine vitamin C with insulin.

Every human being needs this essential vitamin because it is necessary for protecting against many illnesses such as the common cold. There are numerous vegetables and fruits that contain vitamin C such as broccoli, kiwis, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, papaya, kale, and cauliflower to mention a few. You do want to be careful not to take too much vitamin C at once because it can cause nausea, diarrhea, and possible cramps.

Research showed that there are positive results when combining vitamin C and insulin for halting blood vessel and cell damage. While patients did not show improvement to the progression of their damage to their blood vessels with C alone, combining it with insulin was clearly showing positive results.

So getting your blood glucose under control requires more than just that for your diabetes. It requires a “therapy” of antioxidants combined with glucose control to get the full positive results required and make the chances of type 2 diabetes less.

It takes a combination of different things to control your sugar levels and the combo of insulin and vitamin C is just one that is needed. Foods combined with supplements that are high in antioxidants are what’s beneficial to avoid suffering from diabetes.

  1. Thank you for sharing about vitamin C and its benefits. I love drinking fresh squeezed orange juice every morning because of the vitamin c benefits. However, my husband often said that it’s full of sugar.

I wonder if too much fresh squeezed orange juice is a good thing? Also is it better to take vitamin c supplements instead?

    • Hi HaRoda,

Fresh squeezed orange juice is good but your husband is correct! There is a lot of sugar content in orange juice.

You can get vitamin C through vegetables or supplements. Fruits are fine as long as you watch the sugar content.

In any event, vitamin C is that important especially if you’re a diabetic.

      Thanks for your comments!

  3. This is all great advice, Rob. I get most of my vitamin c through my veggies as I don’t eat a lot of fruit and I watch my sugar intake. I also take a vitamin c supplement. I have also heard that vitamin c is helpful with gum disease and healthy teeth. What do you think?

    • Hi Wendy,

Yes the best way to get vitamins is through vegetables and fruits but especially veggies because of the sugar intake.

I also take a vitamin C supplement everyday.

And yes vitamin C is very healthy for your gums and oral health care. You want to have good oral health care because diabetes can have an affect on it as well.

      Thank you for your comments!
