How is Pomegranate Good for Diabetes? | Benefits for Blood Sugar

Pomegranates may contain sugar, but they are connected to antioxidants that fight cell damage and lower your blood sugar levels. There are 4 specific antioxidants that aid in reducing your blood glucose levels. So How is Pomegranate Good for Diabetes? They are very healthy for you. Here’s why:

Is Pomegranate a Good Choice for Diabetics?

Pomegranate
Pomegranates

Researched revealed that patients who participated in a study in consuming pomegranate juice of 1 1/2 ml had a substantial decline in their blood sugar levels after a period of three hours.

Green tea and red wine contain antioxidants. But consuming pomegranate juice from commercial sources are three times more potent when it comes to the antioxidants in green tea and red wine.

This is because they are not just extracted from the seeds but from the whole fruit itself. This is a perfect reason to have pomegranate juice!

Your body can have damage to its cells that is caused by free radicals and the antioxidants in pomegranates help in fighting this off.Β  It’s hard for your body to fight off free radicals that can cause inflammation and destroy your cells. The result is that your body suffers from oxidative stress. That’s where the antioxidants from pomegranate come in to help with reducing this.

There are many fruits that contain too much sugar. Pomegranates have sugars that are β€œattached” with the antioxidants that are responsible for lowering LDL bad cholesterol levels, lowering blood sugar, insulin resistance, and damage to your cells.

This is accomplished by raising the antioxidant levels that are natural in your body by over a whopping 140%! This process aids in the prevention of heart disease and obesity which are two symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

Normally it’s advisable to stay away from fruit juices because of their sugar content and ability to spike your blood glucose levels. But with pomegranates it’s good because both the fruit and the pomegranate seeds are a great benefit for reducing blood sugars and treating diabetes.

So how do pomegranates reduce insulin resistance? The cells in your pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin can have their function increased by consuming pomegranate juice. In addition it can reduce your insulin resistance and this results in your cells using insulin in a more productive manner. Glucose being used much better is going to benefit your diabetes and blood sugars.

There was actually a report in the β€œJournal of Medicinal Food” back in 2007 that stated how the flowers, seeds, and juices of pomegranate have an activity that is hypoglycemic. It also reveals that there are three acids that are antioxidants that are possibly components that are anti-diabetic.

It’s vital that you test your blood sugars frequently and stay on top of your numbers with your doctor whether you consume pomegranates or not.

Coronary Heart Disease
Coronary Heart Disease

By having pomegranates in your diet the juice will provide you with a burst of antioxidants and give you plenty of fiber that can neutralize the sugar in pomegranate. These extremely high potent antioxidants which are polyphenols and flavonoids, help protect you against cancer and heart disease as I mentioned before.

  1. This is interesting. There are in fact soo many natural foods, fruits, veggies and nuts that can do soo much good for our health. This one was new to me though. I never thought Pomegrante could improve your diabetes.
When you are on very specific and excluding diets such as for example the LCHF you miss things like this simply because there is soo much you are not allowed to eat. Better then, to do research and found out which foods really are good for you.
    Thanks for some great info.

    • Hey Jojo,

Yes there are tons of natural foods that are healthy. When you have diabetes, you look for everything you can that will help.

There are so many diets as well and they don’t always cover all the essential foods you need especially for diabetics.

Pomegranates are extremely healthy and help with your sugars and controlling your diabetes too.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I am a nurse practitioner and I work in a diabetes clinic. I have never heard of the benefits of pomegranates until now. I didn’t know that anti-oxidants can affect the blood sugar and decrease insulin resistance that much.

My only issue is that I’ve never eaten a pomegranate before. It looks like a fruit full of seeds. Do you just bite into it like an apple? Also, how many pomegranates do you need to eat daily to start seeing its benefits? Thanks for this article!

    • Hi there Francis πŸ™‚

Let me congratulate you for being a nurse. I have a lot of respect for nurses. It’s a tough job and very important.Β

Pomegranates do have a lot of antioxidants and can definitely benefit your diabetes.

As far as eating pomengranates, although it can be rather messy, you can make it a bitΒ neater when you actually eatΒ the entire seed. You can begin by cutting the pomegranate in half. Then, take a spoon and get the tiny red seeds out and put them into a bowl. You can add the seeds to salads, oatmeal, yogurts, desserts, or almost anything.

      Hope this helps πŸ™‚

      Cheers!

  3. Wow, there seems to be a lot of goodness with this unique fruit. Initially, I wasn’t very keen because it isn’t the easiest to eat, but I’ve seen a new juice outlet that’s selling it like hotcakes.

My mom is diabetic Type 2 and she loves fruits. So it’s good to know a more natural alternative that can help to maintain a stable glucose and blood pressure level. Thanks for sharing the tips.

When you have type 2 diabetes you want to have every food and in this case pomegranate that you can to help lower your blood sugar and keep your type 2 diabetes in control.

Your mom’s on the right track. Start adding pomegranate to your diet more!

  4. Hi Rob
I am going to go buy a pomegranate tree and grow one as I am diabetic and love my garden so it is a win-win for me although I will have to buy some 1st to see whether I enjoy the taste. Having said that I could always add them to something if that makes the flavour better
This is such a great article and my sugar levels needs help big time

  5. Wow, I honestly had no idea that pomegranates had so many health benefits. I always found them to just be the food that was incredibly frustrating to eat because all the little seeds fall out and go everywhere!

I’ve heard and read before that you’re often far better off eating the whole fruit (for any fruit) as opposed to simply drinking the juice. This ensures you get the appropriate amount of fiber to help balance out the sugar influx from the fruit. Would you say it is the same for pomegranates?

    Reply
    • Hi Craig πŸ™‚ Yes pomegranates are really healthy and offer a ton of benefits. I’m always into anything that will help in lowering blood sugar and controlling diabetes. But everything always has many other benefits to diabetes. I always like to include them because your health is just that important!
Yes, you are better off eating the whole fruit as opposed to drinking the juice. It may be a bit messier but you’re correct, you will get the whole benefits of the fiber that way.
      Thank you for your insight!

  6. Hi Rob. I absolutely love pomegranates, particularly the juice. I had no idea they contained so many health benefits. You say that they are excellent for diabetic 2 sufferers and that they actually lower blood sugars. Can you tell me if they are also low in Carbohydrates? My five year old granddaughter suffers from Diabetes 1. She cannot produce insulin at all so her diet has to be carefully monitored. Everything she eats requires a low carbohydrate level but she loves fruit of any sort. Jim

    Reply
    • Hi Jim! I love pomegranates but I tend to stay away from the juice. That’s just my choice. I always read labels and stay away from sugar as much as possible. It’s safer and healthier to eat the fruit. There are 16 grams of carbs in pomegranate. I know that type 1 diabetes has to be monitored very carefully. There are other fruits that are great for diabetics including berries which are low on the glycemic index level.
Good luck and I hope she’s doing great! Thank you for commenting!

  7. On my last visit to the doctor I was in the “pre-diabetic” stage. My family has a history of diabetes, and I want to do everything I can before resulting to any medications. I like the idea of pomengranate and/or juice. But, my question is: how the heck do I eat it? I bought one, and it was a pain in the arse to fish them out of the membrane. Any suggestions? I’m willing to try. Or should I stick to pomegranate supplements, or juice? Thanks

  8. It’s always good news when a delicious fruit is said to be extra healthy. But I am particularly attracted to the pomegranate because it often seems to be a key component in several mythological tales, like that of Demeter, Hades and Persephone.

I even once remember that some think it was the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.

After reading your informative article it doesn’t much sound like ‘the fruit of the dead’!

    • Hey Tony, I always love writing about fruits that are healthy and that are good for people with diabetes. Not all fruits are great for type 2 diabetics but pomegranates are good. You have an exceptional way of connecting them with mythological tales. And if it was a forbidden fruit, then let’s be thankful it isn’t now! Thank you for your thoughts!

I haven’t purchased juice for my family for a couple of years now – for that particular reason. While I like pomegranate, I had no clue it had such a wide range of health benefits – especially with helping diabetes. There are some people in my family who have diabetes and I am definitely going to tell them about this article.
