Vitamin C is another vital and powerful antioxidant found in beets. Research revealed that blood glucose levels and lipid levels in type 2 diabetics were significantly improved because of the vitamin C in beets. It just goes to show how important vitamin C really is.

Diabetics tend to have low levels of antioxidants including vitamin C. High blood glucose levels tend to hamper the uptake of vitamin C so it’s vital to get plenty of vitamin C from foods that are rich in it. It’s always better to get your vitamins from food sources than supplements.

Beets also contain magnesium which is an extremely powerful antioxidant. Do they still retain any nutritional value if boiled? Great article.

You may lose some nutritional value when cooking beets as opposed to having them raw, but they are still very nutritious.

  7. Dear Rob,

That was a really in-depth guide, it was very well researched. Thanks a lot for sharing!

While reading the benefits of beets, it’s mind-blowing and to be honest you have given me plenty to think about here. This post is so thorough that it opened my eyes to all sorts of information I wasn’t aware of!

I do remember shouting when my urine is in red color and my mom calmed me down saying its because of beets I ate Lol.

My wife is pregnant and the doctor asked to eat beets, she doesn’t like beets and finding them hard to eat. I shared your post and after reading it she said I will eat beets at least twice a week. Thank you so much and it means a lot to me.

    Much Success!

    • Hey Paul,

Thank you! It’s important to spread the word about good things like beets and how healthy they are for you.

I love vegetables and especially beets now because they are one of the healthiest vegetables on the planet!

I can relate to the urine turning red. It is scary! But once you know it’s from the beets, it’s no big deal.

I don’t overdo it, so once or twice a week is sufficient for having beets, at least for me anyway.

Do you think your wife will really give in and eat beets?

Thank you for your insight 🙂

  8. Thank you for sharing ¨HOW ARE BEETS  GOOD FOR DIABETICS ?-THE EXTRAORDINARY HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEETS¨. Although I do not have higher than normal levels of glucose, my grandfather died with diabetes type 1. So I need to be careful with my diet and be alert to any symptoms of prediabetes. I have beets as part of my regular diet.Just to complement your article, nitrates in inadequately stored beet juice can convert to potentially harmful substance nitrate, as it can expose the beet to certain type of bacteria. So, I´m always careful to store beets correctly. I cut leaves around 2 inches from the root as soon as they arrive in my kitchen. I keep the bulbs in the fridge for up to 10 days and store the leaves in a separate bag. I usually eat them within 2 days. Some of the nutrients in beets reduce with longer cooking time, as do their beneficial effects, as a result I eat them raw either as a juice, as mentioned in your article, or simply grated on a salad. Beetroot is also a delicious addition to risottos and a traditional accompaniment to mackerel.I hope you can find this useful.

    • Hi Enrigue,

Yes when diabetes runs in your family you have to be especially careful with what you eat.

You want to do everything you can to avoid diabetes. Beets help you avoid diabetes.

You’ve got some excellent information about stored beet juice. I’m sure we all find that very useful too!

And like anything else, you should never eat too many beets. Overdoing it is not healthy. Moderation is the key!

Thanks for your info on beetroot and your comments! 🙂
