Children With Diabetes Symptoms – Juvenile Diabetes Awareness

It’s important to know that Children With Diabetes Symptoms are generally caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin from the pancreas. It is an autoimmune disease which causes the body’s own defenses to attack the body’s organs or tissues. Let’s dive right into this, shall we?

What Should You be Looking For?

A diabetic child has the same dreams and aspirations as other children and it is important that they are treated in the same way. Diabetes in children also known as juvenile diabetes is mainly type 1 diabetes. It’s the most common type of diabetes in children within the age of 16 years or below. Juvenile diabetes should also be able to communicate freely with others be it at home or in school.

Child With Insulin

Children with type 2 diabetes is usually caused by being overweight. The cause of the increase in type 1 diabetes is not properly explained. It is alleged that a combination of environmental and genetics is what activates juvenile diabetes. A majority of these children do not have a family history of diabetes.

Children with diabetes is among the most common long-term diseases in school-age children. Obesity and unhealthy eating habits are primarily the causes of the condition among children.

Type 2 diabetes is not a common incidence among school kids. In just over 20 years, occurrence rates among teenagers and kids have almost tripled.

The diabetic condition which was formerly known as juvenile diabetes is mainly found among young kids, although the problem is presently known to happen among adults too.  Any individual with a close relative like a sibling or parent with diabetes is more likely to get the disease. As mentioned earlier, environmental factors can also be the cause of the rise of early symptoms.

Symptoms From High Blood Sugar

When your body basically does not have any more insulin in your body, the blood sugar levels can rise fast and the following symptoms can also occur rapidly as listed below:

Tired Child

Extreme Weakness or Tiredness

The causes of extreme weakness or tiredness is related to blood sugar. High blood glucose makes your blood moves very slowly, slowing circulation so cells can’t get the oxygen and nutrients they need.

In addition, high blood glucose causes fatigue over inflammation. Blood vessels get inflamed by the sugar.

Extreme Thirst and Dehydration

When there’s no more insulin in the body, blood glucose levels rise quickly, and these symptoms can rapidly develop extreme weakness and tiredness. Extreme thirst dehydration results in increased urination.

Increased Urination

The child will continue to urinate often because the body’s importance is to clear out the excess sugar. Dehydration can be avoided by drinking a lot of fluids. Excessive urination and thirst are usually the first indications of high blood sugar level typical of diabetes.

Abdominal Pain

A condition in which emptying of food from the stomach is delayed is called diabetic gastroparesis, leading to retention of stomach contents. This may cause early satiety, bloating, distention, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. All these mentioned diagnosis of gastroparesis is often suspected on the basis of symptoms alone.

Nausea or Vomiting

Children with diabetes get sick once in a while, just like other kids. While stress tends to make blood sugar rise in people with diabetes, some illnesses cause loss of appetite, vomiting or nausea. The poor intake of food can lead to low blood sugar levels in someone taking the usual doses of insulin.

Fuzzy Vision

An obvious sign that your vision is blurry is telling you that your diabetes is not being controlled. When the blood glucose levels are higher for an extended period of time, water from the body is pulled into the lens of the eye.

This may cause it to swell. Once you get your blood glucose back to normal levels, then your swelling should disappear. This could take as long as about six weeks to happen.

Wounds That Don’t Heal Well

Diabetes is linked to wounds that take more time to heal. This can lead to diabetes  with a much higher blood sugar and can lead to a poorer blood circulation and affecting your nerves which will make it a lot harder for your blood to repair your areas of your that are affected by these wounds.

Irritability or Quick Mood Changes

Managing diabetes can be stressful and fluctuating blood sugar levels may add to mood swings.  A person’s mood can be affected as a result of diabetes. Blood sugar swings can cause sudden changes in a their mood, such as making them feel sad.

The Need for Insulin

Many children with diabetes require insulin. During the early phases of diagnosis, they may also require small doses of fast acting and slow acting insulin, which boosts with age. The advent of insulin pumps for administration has allowed several children to add flexibility on daily basis. When administering, dosage and frequency of injections all rely on the child’s age, blood glucose level, and activity.

It is better to call your doctor if your child has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes or notice any of these signs of a low blood sugar emergency:

Blurry or double vision, cold, clammy skin, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness or tiredness, extreme or sudden hunger, headache, pale and moist skin.

Sugar does not cause diabetes, but can play a role in type 2 diabetes. Eating too much sugary foods and drinks can make people put on weight.  And weight gain from eating too much food can make a person’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

You should balance blood sugar levels to control diabetes since low or high sugar levels can display health risks, mostly for children who still belong in the growing age. It is significant that the child and the parent watch the blood sugar levels daily and adjust the exercise, meals, and dosage accordingly.

However, patients need to eat fewer fats that come from animals and sugars. They should consume many fruits, fibers, and vegetables. There is no need for parents cooking separate meals for the diabetic child since the whole family may consume the diet. It is not advisable to skip meals since the effect is dangerous.

Attention: Parents

Parents are advised to pass these messages to their children in a way that they can benefit from what you have learned. The way the disease is to adults, is the same way it is for children.  Eating and exercising healthy can avert diabetes disease. You must make the change and so do your children.

Kids Physical Activity

Physical activity is an essential aspect of diabetes since it lowers blood glucose levels. Although exercise is good, the sugar levels shouldn’t go down too much. Always consult your doctor about the exercise and diet program to suit the special needs of the child.

There are medications that help adjust the blood resistance to insulin in type 2 diabetes. It is necessary to watch your carbohydrate and fat intake very closely.

Loving your child at all costs is paramount. It is better to advise your child of excellent eating habit to follow like foods like fruits and vegetables. Avoid sugar, carbohydrates, and foods that contain high levels of saturated fats. They are perhaps the foods that brought on the diabetes disease.

Support your child and show them an abundance of love and caring. If you are living a healthy lifestyle they are likely to follow suit. Create time for family exercise. You can as well, engage them with a workout program and see if you can get your child into the same program.

This will become a habit with your child that can last a lifetime. Helping your child at this critical time of their lives is one thing that can improve your relationship forever.

Telling your child how chemical changes that take place in the body, causing the blood sugar level to become low. Its’ effects would help the child understand more about the diabetic child’s condition.

Diabetic children might sometimes be having so much fun and become absorbed with what they are doing and will no longer notice signs of low blood sugar. It is imperative for diabetic children to a catchphrase from taking simple sugar because eating sugar cubes or drinking a fruit juice would help to raise their sugar levels back to the normal levels.

What Children Should be Aware of

The children should also know that they might act shaky because a diabetic person reacts to the chemical changes in the body. When the diabetic child goes for a test, their blood sugar level might drop and those signs and symptoms might show, requiring them to have some appetizers to keep their blood sugar at the norm and not let it drop too low.

Children With Headaches

Children with diabetes can have an increase in headaches, behavior problems and stomach pains. If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment with your doctor without delay. And tell the doctor what you are suspecting.

We have identified that the symptoms of children’s diabetes are the same as in adults, like frequent thirst, fatigue, frequent urination, weight loss.

If not treated, they can cause serious issues such as kidney damage, increased probability of infections, eye damage, poor blood circulation to the legs and feet, damage to the nerves and feet and a significantly increased likelihood of stroke and heart disease, hence an urgent need to monitor and treat it appropriately.

  1. Thank you for taking the time to write this post, you have covered so much important information. I will be sure to look out for any of these symptoms in my own children, I hope that it wont be an issue but if it is I at least have some good ideas on treatment thanks to this post. I will bookmark it just in case….

    • Hi Chris,

Diabetes isn’t selective as it can affect anyone at any age.

Juvenile diabetes is type 1 diabetes in children and they must adapt as anyone else with type 1 diabetes.

But children can also develop type 2 diabetes and that’s when you have to look out for the symptoms.

Hopefully one day nobody will have to worry about diabetes anymore, especially the children!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! 🙂

  2. As a person who has been fighting type 2 diabetes my heart goes out to children dealing with any illness. But especially with diabetes. This is a battle that the whole family needs to be along with. Pulling that child up and encouraging them. Together you will overcome this diagnosis.

Not to make it sound easy. It is a tough road. But it is very possible. You give good advice. Go back to the basics of life. I was talking to my wife. We need to back to the basics. From the ground, from a tree, or from an animal. Served correctly. Yet no one is perfect. But eating at McDonalds etc everyday is not going to cut it.

I do have a question though. Do children outgrow Juvenile diabetes? Or do they carry Type 1 diabetes into their adulthood?

    • Hey Ceddy,

I agree that it is tough when a child has diabetes because they don’t understand.

It’s important as the parent to help guide the child through this stressful time.

Going back to the basics makes sense. Eating properly and exercising is the right thing to do.

But if a child has juvenile diabetes type 1, there isn’t much you can do other than insulin. Children who develop type 2 is a different story. You can guide them to treat it the same way you would as an adult.

Children do not outgrow juvenile diabetes. It is carried through their adulthood.

      Thank you for your insight!

  3. This is such a great article and the information is so valuable. It’s scary and sad to think that kids can get diabetes so early in their lives. I have two kids and I will pass on this article to my wife so that can also be aware of juvenile diabetes.

As you suggest, parents should have conversation with their children about what could be the consequences of not following a healthy diet and being active. Perhaps not to the point of scaring the kids but instead to make them realize that they need to be more careful with what they eat and do.

Thanks for sharing such a educative post!
