Can Type 2 Diabetes Turn Into Type 1? | Is this Possible?

Can Type 2 Diabetes Turn Into Type 1? It’s not easy when you have diabetes regardless of which type it is. You can live a normal life as long as your diabetes is controlled. But let’s talk about the difference between both types of diabetes and how they affect your life. We first need to know what each type of diabetes is and how to handle it.

What is the Difference Between Type 2 and Type 1 Diabetes?

Can Type 2 Diabetes Turn into Type 1
Diabetes Insulin Injection

There may be many folks who have type 2 diabetes and for adults, that equates to approximately 90-95% of all those who suffer from diabetes. That is the overwhelming majority of all diabetics.

I just want to set the record straight by saying that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1 diabetes. But there is a possibility that if you are diagnosed with type 2, that you can still receive a diagnosis of type 1 somewhere down the line.

Type 1 diabetes is when your pancreas produces little to no insulin and you are most likely diagnosed with type 1 at an early age. But it is possible to develop type 1 later on in your life even though it’s not typical to do so.

Type 2 diabetes in someone who actually does receive a diagnosis of type 1 later on was typically misdiagnosed in the first place.

Improper Diagnosis?

Yes, the biggest reason that makes sense when you are later on told you have type 1 diabetes is that you were misinformed of your type 2 diabetes in the first place. Tests are always done, but not properly diagnosed. It’s important to discuss everything with your doctor to make sure the tests were read right and performed correctly. But even then, there’s no guarantee that the results are 100% right.

Insulin- The Facts

We all require our bodies to produce insulin. When this either doesn’t happen at all or not enough, diabetes is or can be the end result. For type 1 diabetics, you are required to have insulin injections. For type 2 you may need insulin injections if medications and lifestyle changes aren’t enough to control your blood sugars.

Type 2 Diabetes vs. Type 1 Diabetes

Again, type 1 diabetics require insulin. It’s imperative to survive. This autoimmune disease which can be hereditary requires insulin injections for the rest of their lives.

Type 2 diabetics have options such as proper diet and exercise and medications that will lower your blood sugar, but medications are not the best way to choose to control your diabetes as a type 2. Following a proper diet and exercising can keep your blood sugars down and keep you off medications.

What about the Symptoms?

With type 1 diabetes, your blood sugar is too high. It is obvious from the symptoms of excessive thirst and hunger, blurred vision, numbness and/or tingling in the feet, weight loss, and also fatigue. In addition if your sugar gets extremely high it can cause symptoms of nausea, dry skin, and rapid breathing.

These identical symptoms can occur in type 2 diabetics, but not for a good number of years and by this time these symptoms have already taken a toll on your body and you had no clue the whole time. It can also cause numbness and/or pain in your feet or hands and possibly erectile dysfunction in males.

Treatments for Both Types

Exercising in Place
Exercising in Place

First of all the best treatment is not medication and doctor visits. It’s diet and exercise. I know I may sound like a broken record but that’s the facts Jack! LOL

It is essential to follow a healthy diet and stick to it. It’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle change that’s permanent. This goes for anything that has to do with either type of diabetes.

Now, as important as that is, exercise is equally important. Get moving! Your body need to get the blood flowing and each and every day! Walk. Ride your bike. Get involved in a sport.

Get an exercise machine, put your headphones on and have some fun! Lift weights. Pick something, but just do it. You will begin to feel better and it will help your blood sugars and diabetes.

Last, but not least. Check your blood sugars regularly according to your doctor’s orders. I check mine twice a day. Everyday. Period. If you’re on medication, take them. The better you take care of yourself, the sooner you might be able to come off your medications. Be proactive!

Can Type 2 Develop into Type 1?

The simple answer once again is no. You’ll have enough to do to control either type 2 or type 1 diabetes. But the best thing you can do is to see and discuss everything you do with your doctor. They are the professionals and they know best.

In Conclusion

Can Type 2 Diabetes Turn Into Type 1? No way. It simply cannot. But misdiagnosis in the beginning is a possibility. Whichever type of diabetes you have, it’s important to control it and turn it around. Diabetes doesn’t mean a death sentence IF you control it.

  1. Hi I would like to thank you me a broader understand u for your informative post on Diabetes type 1 and 2. • Hey Marcus,

You’re welcome sir! It’s good for diabetics or folks who are prediabetic to know the difference between the two types of diabetes.

There is actually a type 3 diabetes which is known as Alzheimer’s disease.

But the fact of the matter is that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1 although some diabetics can actually be diagnosed with type 1 later on in their lives even though it doesn’t come from type 2.

I’m hoping that this article gets shared by everyone who reads it in hope that it will help others.

I thank you for your comments. πŸ™‚

  2. Many thanks to you for sharing such an excellent article with us. My father has type 2 diabetes for three years and he has to take insulin regularly, so I am always aware of how to control diabetes with his diet and exercise. It is possible to live a normal life through diabetes control. Diet and exercise can lower blood sugar and keep you off medication. High blood sugar is very high in people with type 1 diabetes. These common symptoms occur in patients with type 2 diabetes as well. The main “drug” for diabetes is lifestyle change. Everything really depends on regular exercise and diet, I think this is a good solution for diabetes patients .

Lastly, I hope that through your article, everyone will know the reason for not type 2 diabetes not turning into type1 and will share their new experiences with you soon.

You’re welcome πŸ™‚ When you have diabetes of either type it’s crucial to know the difference and how to address it.

I’m sorry to hear that your father has type 2 diabetes. Insulin is the course of action but with a lifestyle change he could come off the insulin.

That of course is the key to controlling diabetes. But the fact is that even if you have type 2 diabetes, it cannot turn into type 1. You either have one or the other.

Now we all need to change our eating habits and get up and get moving!

  3. This is really helpful info, thanks for sharing! There is so much misinformation about diabetes out there and, as common as it is, it’s really important for everyone to know the facts. Type 1 and 2 are quite different in some ways, but similar in others, as you mentioned.

I’m a keto diet blogger and get asked lots of questions about diabetes – do you have an opinion about it?

    • Hey Katie πŸ™‚

You’re welcome! It’s important to spread the word about diabetes whether it’s type 1, type 2, or both.

As we know type 1 your body isn’t producing insulin and with type 2 it’s not producing enough.

But the truth is that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1. I mean it’s hard enough having one type of diabetes let alone two!

I believe in the keto diet and I think t’s awesome for diabetics. As far as questions about diabetes itself? I don’t have any questions but my website is all about answers!

      Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

  4. It is somewhat confusing to hear people say it is possible for type 2 diabetes to become type 1. Prior to coming across this article, I also suspected that even if this was possible, there had to be an element of type 1 all along. Now this article certainly offers a lot more clarity. Obviously, such cases usually come down to misdiagnosis. Great insight.

    • Hi Rhain πŸ™‚

I agree that this can be rather confusing. But the reality is that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1.

To be honest, it’s a good thing because isn’t having even one type of diabetes enough to contend with? It sure is!

With type 2, you can control it with diet and exercise. And if you weren’t following a healthy lifestyle, then there’s a good chance that is what got you into type 2 diabetes in the first place.

So to be clear, type 2 cannot turn into type 1. So just try and get your type 2 diabetes under control and focus on that.

Appreciate your comments! Thank you πŸ™‚

  5. Hello, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. Diabetes can become very deadly if not managed well and I have actually seen cases where type 2 diabetes turned into type into type 1 although it was as a result of negligence and it affected a lot. Thank you for this great post.

    • Hey Benny,

Thank you so much for saying! Since I have type 2 diabetes, I just want everyone with diabetes to be as well informed about the disease as possible.

The truth is that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1 diabetes.

But it’s hard enough to control just one type of diabetes at a time. So that’s good news, right?

The bottom line with either type of diabetes is to get your blood sugars under control and this will help you to control your diabetes.

Thank you for your comments. Much appreciated πŸ™‚

  6. Hello Rob, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. I am glad I stumbled upon it because my friend told me that Diabetes type 2 can convert to type 1 which I thought it is not possible. It is great you explained it well. I will start following you from now on, thank you for sharing your knowledge about this disease.

    • Hey Danijel,

Thank you very much for saying! I know that there are diabetics out there wondering if type 2 diabetes can turn into type 1. It’s not possible thankfully.

It’s hard enough to deal with even one type of diabetes, forget about two types! The best thing that we can do is to eat right and exercise to prevent type 2 in the first place.

Type 1 is when your body produces little to no insulin. So that’s a different story.

But lifestyle changes can hopefully prevent type 2 diabetes which can never turn into type 1.

I appreciate your feedback. Thank you πŸ™‚

  7. Very informative post. I didn’t realize the differences between type 1 and type 2. My father has type 2 and I believe he’s doing as well as he is because he is very active. It’s amazing that exercise can help with diabetes. It’s nice to see some advice too that can help people get off their medications.

    • Hey Tara πŸ™‚

Thank you! I believe that a great many people do know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. But I’m sure that not everyone knows that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1 diabetes.

Sorry to hear that your father has type 2 but being active and eating healthy are the two best things that he can do.

Exercise really does bring down your sugar levels. No matter what type diabetes you may have it’s good to know that it is either one or the other, not both.

I appreciate your feedback. Thank you πŸ™‚

  8. Diabetes is hereditary in my family but I am not affected, it has claimed the lives of two of my siblings. My father is not diabetic but his father was, I am glad I am not too but how come?

Is it by cheer luck or fortune or is there a medical explanation for it? Would any of my kids be affected? Diabetes is a ragging pandemic ravaging through families all over the world. I used to think that type two diabetes can turn to type one, now I know better, thanks for the very enlightening and educating article.

    • Hi, Sorry to hear that diabetes is hereditary in your family. It’s good that you are not affected too.

I guess with genetics there’s no way of telling if you would develop it. Diabetes isn’t good whether it’s type 1 or type 2.

But the fact of the matter is that type 2 diabetes cannot turn into type 1. It’s difficult enough to deal with just one type of diabetes let alone two.

Let’s all try and get a grip on this horrible disease and learn everything we can about it.

  9. I want to thank you for the great article about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and giving us the insight of how to prevent and treatment of diabetes type 1 and type 2. But for the debate, I am not sure type 2 diabetes can turn in type 1 except the diagnosis was a mistake. Sometimes mistakes happen so make sure you run more than diagnosis to be sure about the type of diabetes, whether it’s type 1 or type 2 .  I will relate the treatment measures to my aunty

    • Hey Smoochi,

You’re welcome. I don’t believe that many people even think about type 2 diabetes turning into type 1. But the ones that do should know it isn’t possible.

It’s hard enough to have a diagnosis of either type 1 or type 2 diabetes let alone both.

The truth is that when you are diagnosed, you should be treating it every way you can and get it under control.

That’s the key! you can love a normal life with with either type so learn to do what is necessary for your health regardless of which type you might have.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Hi, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge about Diabetes with us. I don’t have anybody close in my life who have diabetes but of course, I have heard enough about it. Other than type one or two, there is the Gestational Diabetes. In Australia, everybody gets checked for this during pregnancy. I have been told by a midwife that you have a higher chance you develop Diabetes later in life if you get Gestational Diabetes. I luckily didn’t get it but apparently it is very common to develop Gestational Diabetes.
May I ask what course the sign with Diabetes when you suffer sleeping hands and feed? I know you can do so much with changing your diet for many issues, I am so happy that you provide help and share your knowledge with people who suffer from this disease.

You’re welcome! With diabetes it’s crucial to learn everything about it. It’s hard enough to learn that you have diabetes let alone thinking you could have both type 2 and type 1.

That’s why I wrote this article to help others relax and not worry that type 2 could ever turn into type 1. It can’t!

I do believe that’s true about gestational diabetes and getting it later on in life.

With diabetes and suffering “sleeping hands and feet”, it’s called neuropathy which I have in my feet.

Thank you for your insight πŸ™‚
