Can Diabetes Cause Jaundice? – Prevent & Treat Jaundice

Can Diabetes Cause Jaundice? Jаundiсе iѕ a соnditiоn in whiсh thе ѕkin, ѕсlеrа (whitеѕ оf thе еуеѕ) аnd muсоuѕ mеmbrаnеѕ turn уеllоw. Thiѕ уеllоw соlоr iѕ саuѕеd bу a high lеvеl оf bilirubin, a уеllоw-оrаngе bilе рigmеnt. Bilе iѕ fluid ѕесrеtеd bу thе livеr.

Man With Jaundice Eyes

Bilirubin iѕ fоrmеd frоm thе brеаkdоwn оf rеd blооd сеllѕ; Bоdу fluidѕ mау аlѕо bе уеllоw. Thе соlоr of thе ѕkin аnd whitеѕ оf thе еуеѕ will vаrу dереnding оn lеvеlѕ of bilirubin. Mоdеrаtе lеvеlѕ lеаd tо a уеllоw соlоr, whilе vеrу high lеvеlѕ will арреаr brоwn.

Diabetics and Jaundice

Bilirubin iѕ a уеllоw рigmеnt рrоduсеd whеn rеd blооd сеllѕ break dоwn. It iѕ knоwn fоr саuѕing jаundiсе, a соnditiоn in whiсh thе ѕkin аnd еуеѕ turn уеllоw bесаuѕе bilirubin buildѕ uр. Althоugh high lеvеlѕ оf bilirubin саn bе a рrоblеm, it iѕ nоrmаl to find ѕоmе аmоunt оf bilirubin in thе blооd. In fасt, thеrе iѕ еvidеnсе thаt bilirubin mау rеduсе thе riѕk оf dеvеlорing tуре 2 diаbеtеѕ mеllituѕ (T2DM).

Bilirubin iѕ a brеаkdоwn оf hеmоglоbin rеѕulting in a уеllоwiѕh рigmеnt fоund in bilе. Whеn оldеr rеd blооd сеllѕ аrе rерlасеd bу nеwеr rеd blооd сеllѕ, bilirubin rеmаinѕ. Thе livеr brеаkѕ dоwn bilirubin by аllоwing it tо bе еxсrеtеd in thе fесеѕ. High lеvеlѕ оf bilirubin саn lеаd tо jаundiсе, whiсh iѕ a уеllоw tingе in оnе’ѕ ѕkin or eyes. Jаundiсе саn indiсаtе livеr оr gаllblаddеr рrоblеmѕ.

Hоwеvеr, ѕеrum bilirubin hаѕ a diѕtinсt rоlе in аnti-inflаmmаtоrу, аntiоxidаnt, аnd immunоlоgiсаl properties, аnd рrоtесtѕ against miсrоvаѕсulаr аnd саrdiоvаѕсulаr соmрliсаtiоnѕ аѕѕосiаtеd with diаbеtеѕ. 1. The human body is so particular, isn’t it?  I mean, bilirubin in normal quantities in the body is an an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, and yet look at all the problems it can cause if it is in too large a supply.  I mean, life-threatening.  It’s just so crazy how we have to keep a good balance of so many different things in the body.  That’s why I just don’t understand how people think they can eat and drink whatever they want, and it’s just going to be fine.  Their poor bodies need so many nutrients to operate this perfectly timed machine to it’s top capacity, and they are just neglecting to give the engine the gas and oil it needs to run.

This article had so much information, wow!  I mean, what a thorough job you did in answering the question, “Can diabetes cause jaundice.”  Great read!

    • Hi Babs 🙂

I agree that the human body is amazing in its’ own way!

I know all too well about bilirubin because I had issues with it years ago. They thought I had hepatitis but it wasn’t.

With jaundice it’s fairly apparent what’s going on. It can affect you in many ways.

But as you mentioned, folks just eat whatever they want and don’t think twice about it.

That leads to many issues health wise.

It pays to eat healthy and exercise, doesn’t it?

      Thank you for your comments!

  2. This was a nice, informative article, thank you!  I knew that jaundice was caused by liver failure or disease, but I didn’t realize that some medications can do it too.  I just know jaundice equals a liver problem.  Though I don’t think diabetes affects the liver, exactly, so not sure it would ever cause jaundice.  Anyway, thanks again for this informative post.  I learn something new every day.

Jaundice is caused by problems with your liver. It may not necessarily be caused by diabetes.

Diabetes can affect the liver because high blood glucose can affect any and every organ.

But jaundice issues usually stem from your liver.

Please feel free to pass this along to others! Thank you 🙂

  3. Wow, now I  understand what jaundice is and how it works in the human system. To be honest, it is very fascinating and I think that one of my friends actually have this. He takes a lot of alcohol and I told him he is getting really yellow. You have also explained how it is related to bilirubin. This post is full of information and i enjoyed reading it. Thank you for the help.

    • Hi John 🙂

When my daughter was born she was jaundice, but fortunately she was fine and so was her liver.

But for folks with diabetes it’s vital to watch your health and get your labs done even more so than those who don’t have diabetes.

With diabetes you must be proactive so any signs of jaundice you should see your doctor immediately!

Drinking a lot of alcohol can take a toll on your liver too. So the doctor would need to find out where the jaundice is from and if it’s diabetes related.

      Thank you for your comments!

  4. Hi

Jaundice is a clear sign that you liver is not working well for a number of reasons, as mentioned in the well written article. It is well known that diabetes can effect organs, with the Liver function can be compromise. It is rare but it can happen. This is why Liver function tests are carried out  at least once a year. The problem being that in medical fields it is difficult to isolate the cause, as a number of factors acting alone or combined together can compound the issue.

I know what it is like to have jaundice as I was a born with it, a severe case. In new born babies, jaundice is very serious as if it is not caught too early or treated quick enough, can result in the child being brain damaged. This is why it is very important to treat jaundice in children very quickly, especially if the child and mother is rhesus incompatible and it is not the first pregnancy. This can cause the bilburin to rise quickly and this is when phototherapy is used.  If it is not working, this is when  a blood transfusion is required.

Gall stones are a leading cause of jaundice in adults, especially if the tubes feeding bile gets blocked. I found the article to be informative but I do not think there is a strong link between the two. I think there would be more damage of the liver from sarcoidosis than from Jaundice.

    Great article.

    • Hey Antonio 🙂

Yes jaundice can be serious as you well know. I can relate to your experience because my daughter was jaundice when she was born.

Everything was okay thankfully. But I agree that your liver tests should be performed at least once a year. I have then checked more than that.

I had issues with my bilirubin too many years ago so I have those levels checked as well.

I also had problems with my gall bladder and had it removed 17 years ago.

But the fact is that while I am not jaundice, I’m still treating the diabetes and doing it the natural ways.

Appreciate your comments! Thank you 🙂

  5. It seems to me that Diabetes destroys the proper function of the organs of our body. Once the organ such as liver, gall bladder, pancreas and so on are damaged, these cause in the malfunction of the production of the required body chemicals including the presence of bilirubin. So, therefore, Diabetes is a very dangerous disease that silently erodes the proper function of our organs. The root cause of jaundice can be attributed to Diabetes as well among other valid medically proven findings. This is a good blog because it spelled out the thing about jaundice, bilirubin and diabetes the triangular items in the continued studies of bilirubin. How it causes of deterioration and function of organs in the human body. I understand it that bilirubin should have a balanced amount in the body because more of it can cause dangerous diseases such as kernicterus, jaundice, and liver damage, maybe more. A low level may lead to retinopathy but good amount of bilirubin maintain ant-inflammatory and antioxidant function in the body, great information. Thanks.

    • Yes, diabetes attacks every organ in your body which is why it’s so serious!

I once had issues with my bilirubin levels when I was younger before I even had diabetes. It turned out to be nothing serious.

It’s vital to go to your doctor regularly and get your labs done so you know your numbers.

Jaundice is nothing to ignore. My daughter was born with jaundice but it’s fairly common in babies so everything was okay.

Jaundice is a sign of issues with your liver so don’t ignore it! Get it checked out!

      Appreciate your feedback 🙂

  6. Hi there! What a good-looking and educating website! And good article of jaundice, diabetes-related to it and how to prevent those. I didn’t actually know what jaundice was before I had yellow eyes, couldn’t stay awake and started to had to shaking legs and finally gone to the doctor. Actually it wasn’t jaundice but my doctors told everything I asked and more about symptoms related to diabetes. Thank God I had “only” some moderate level inflammation syndrome and it was not chronic and nowadays I am about as healthy as in teenage. However, thanks for a good article, this kind of info is very helpful and absolutely important. Not everyone can be “lucky” enough to have own experiences about these and know how to prevent these, what it may cause and so on.

    • Hey Jesse,

Thank you! My goal is to help as many others as possible when it comes to lowering blood sugars and treating diabetes.

Glad to hear that you weren’t jaundice but it’s unfortunate about the diabetes.

It’s hard enough to be diagnosed with one disease let alone two or more.

But you mentioned symptoms and that’s always a tip off when it comes to being jaundice or pre-diabetic.

Health is the most important thing my friend as we all know!

      I appreciate your feedback! 🙂

  7. You have a very comprehensive website with many topics. I was a Medical Technologist for several years and currently have type 2 diabetes. It was interesting to read about your topic about “can diabetes cause jaundice”. Your article on this is probably true, however, I believe it is rare. I never did encounter a diabetic with liver disease, Diabetes can, however, cause other problems such as heart disease, kidney disease and loss of eyesight to name just a few.

Your topic about the importance of diet is right on the money. I was asked to see a dietician at the Clinic I attend. I received good advice…..a well-rounded breakfast including whole grains and lots of greens with lunches and supper. I have been on insulin for the past 2 years as my pancreas is not pumping out enough insulin to keep my blood sugar normal. I am being taken off of some medication (onglyza, gliclazide) as they did not do much good for me. Metformin is the only medication I will be taking ( helps insulin in the blood to enter the cells) besides insulin. I also work out every day in our Fitness Room and find this to be helpful in controlling blood sugar levels

I know by your article that you believe in the natural way of curing diabetes and with some people, It may actually work. If you find something that works, I would like an e-mail. I have yet to find anything outside prescribed medication that works

It is amazing that with all the different medications available out there, that the one that works best for me was discovered over 50 years ago by Dr. Banting. The new epi-pens for injecting are painless and easy to use. You are a very good writer and I will bookmark your website to read again.

    • Hey Murray 🙂

Thank you! The goal of my website is to help others control blood sugars by natural methods of which there are many here that do work.

But can diabetes cause jaundice? I agree that it is unlikely but possible. Yes I agree that diabetes does so many negative things to your body and that we must be aware.

Medications work but only mask the problem which is why I recommend the natural ways.

Information is knowledge and I have a lot of information for diabetics on my website that can help.

Diet and exercise my friend! That’s always what it’s about, right?

      Thank you for your comments!

  8. It is so surprising to see that jaundice can be caused by diabetes. But I have a disturbing question… In my area, I noticed that the major people that are susceptible to jaundice are the new born babies. Could it be possible that those newborn babies are having a particular stage of diabetes that can make them produce bilirubin that usually caused jaundice?

    Reply
    • Hey Stella 🙂

It doesn’t necessarily mean that diabetes can and will cause jaundice. It’s just a possibility.

New born babies are always more susceptible to jaundice. My daughter was born with jaundice and it was fairly common.

Babies born with jaundice just have a higher level of bilirubin which as in my daughter’s case, disappeared after a week or two.

So I don’t believe that they have an earlier stage of diabetes.

      Thank you for your input!
