My Review of Protein Bars for Diabetics

Protein is important for your body and there are many foods that provide you with the necessary amounts of protein. But that doesn’t mean that you eat and like all the foods with protein and if you’re looking for more energy and you have diabetes, then the protein bars I will be reviewing will be a good fit for your daily routine and diet.

Before I get into any more detail about protein and protein bars, I want to say that not all protein bars are created equal and with diabetes sugar and carbohydrate content is important. Let’s face it, we all need some sugar, but only in trace amounts in a protein bar which is why companies manufacture the protein bars with little or no sugar for diabetics in particular.

Having a healthy protein bar as a snack in between meals is a great way to fulfill your hunger needs without filling you up on candies and junk foods. You should be having between 25 and 35 grams of protein at any given meal. You should keep that in mind with protein bars. With diabetes, you want as little as possible when it comes to grams of sugar.

The goal is to look for bars that have 20-30 grams of protein. That isn’t going to be hard to find. Some may have a little less or a little more but you get the general idea. The goal here is to help you to try to lose weight which is what the protein bars will help you do because weight loss is one of the best things you can do for your diabetes and its’ control.

These protein bars are for meal replacements or snacks in between which provide protein and nutrition for your body. But do note that this does NOT mean that you eat 3 or 4 bars at a time! They still contain calories and some sugar! Substitution, ladies and gents!

One Protein Bar-

With 20 grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar, the One Protein Bar is just what you’re looking for when it comes to protein and nutrition for diabetics. And the taste is great! Some protein bars do not taste good at all, at least not to me. But that’s not the case with the One Bar! And they are just 190-230 calories!

The flavors are awesome and surprisingly sweet with only 1 gram of sugar! My favorite is the peanut butter one. Cake frosting is a close second. But they are all delicious so no complaints here.

There were 386 reviews at the time of writing this review.

I always have a positive attitude and most of the reviews were positive. But I wanted to share a couple of negative comments with you as well. One dissatisfied person talked about the fact that while others were boasting about the fact that these are good, they tried them and didn’t care for them.  And there’s another person who wasn’t thrilled either because some of the flavors were good, but not all of them and they only liked just one flavor.

But the majority of folks had positive experiences and here’s one individual did get all the bars but they weren’t all as described but it wasn’t a factor because they tasted great regardless!

Another person was happy with their purchase even though others may not have delivered what they promised, this person did get what they ordered.

While these protein bars are good, they may not be my best choice compared to the others but that’s just me. Everyone has different tastes! Yours may be different from mine.

There are a few folks who were a little less than satisfied with the Extend bars. First was a person who felt the taste wasn’t bad, but that there are many protein bars with low carbs available today. Okay, they didn’t care for the taste so much. Then a second person felt they were just okay and not their favorite choice but did provide a lot of vitamins.

Now to the other side of the coin, another individual thought that they are an excellent product. and you can appreciate these even if you aren’t a diabetic.

And another person who seemed to be content replied that they love these bars and they do what they are supposed to do. They help you with hunger pains after working out too. Sounds good to me!

I find these to be very beneficial for curbing my appetite and getting me through the hunger pains in the afternoon. You can’t be the ingredients and with zero sugar!

These are excellent for helping to control blood sugar because they contain “carbsteady” which is a specific blend of carbs that aid in controlling your sugar levels from spiking.

Doctors recommend Glucerna as their #1 brand of protein bars for diabetics. Each bar contains only 80 calories, 3 grams of sugar, 12 grams of carbs, and 3 grams of protein. This could be a downer if you’re looking for more protein but as a diabetic, I would be concerned more with the other numbers because that’s what keeps your blood sugar down.

At the time of the writing of this review there were 264 reviews.

So the first comment I’d like to share is a person who purchased this product two times now. Each time they were delivered the bars had appeared to have melted down. They thought they could still eat them but was disappointed and not what was expected. Unfortunately, this seems like a valid complaint to me.

Next up another person felt that the packaging was deceiving and that the protein bar was about half the size of the package. There was only about 2 bites! The 80 calories is great, but it makes you want to eat more than you normally would!”

Someone was happy because their thought was that the Glucerna Mini Treat Bars should be top rated as far as their ratings goes. They ranked them very high in taste, value, quality, sugar content, carbohydrate content.

A second individual was definite about re-ordering because the Glucerna protein bars really worked for them. It was a great pick me up energy bar when they were feeling low on energy.

I personally find these to be okay and they do the job. The only issue I have is that the bars get squished in the box in shipping and appear to be smaller than they should be. This is something that should be addressed! Still a good product though.

These are my personal choice! I love these Pure Protein bars. I’m a chocolate fanatic and you can’t beat these protein bars! They have 20 grams of protein, only 2 grams of sugar, 17 grams of carbs, and just 200 calories.

You get (6) Chewy Chocolate Chip, 1.76 oz, (6) Chocolate Peanut Butter, 1.76 oz, and (6) Chocolate Deluxe, 1.76 oz. I love the taste of all three of these and they are perfect for diabetics because the carbs and sugar are low.

While I am writing this review, there are currently 1,504 customer reviews.

The first thought was from someone not quite content and felt that the protein bars are low in sugar and high in protein, but did feel that the Quest Protein bars was a better deal for them.

Someone else was disappointed with this product. They felt that the bars were just a bit hard to swallow and didn’t have a taste that was up to par with other brands.

But the majority of folks were very content. One felt that they kept you feeling full for a longer period of time and also tasted great. They contain low sugar and high protein so you aren’t hungry again in 30 minutes.

That’s exactly how I feel about the Pure Protein Bars! Again, still my pick over the others!

Quest Protein Bars

The Quest Protein Bars contain 20-21 grams of protein, 170-200 calories, 4-6 net carbs, and only 1-3 grams of sugar. Their ingredients are scientifically beneficial. Protein is made up of a combination of whey protein isolates and milk protein which results in protein that is cleaner meaning it does not contain excess fats and carbs. They are also gluten free!

I rate The Quest bars a close second behind the Pure Protein Bars. They taste great and I love the fact that they are low in sugar and carbs as well. I really do like the Quest bars but let’s see what others have said.

At the time of this review, there are 13,563 reviews.

This person wasn’t happy because while they did like the Quest bars, a new ingredient of corn fiber was added and it caused them to have gas and bloating. Since then they weren’t as good as before.

An individual had received their monthly order and noticed a change in the packaging which lead to finding out that the ingredients had changed drastically.

But there are many more positive comments than negative ones and one person didn’t care for reading all about the negative comments about the bars. They felt that the bars were just great. There never appeared to be any signs of mold or foreign debris in any of the bars and that they were always a perfect product.

One more person said they they switch back and forth with the different bars but mostly enjoy the chocolate ones best. They’re great for breakfast!

They have a great variety of flavors and it appears that most folks are happy with the Quest bars.

These are the best protein bars for diabetics. There are five choices and while I feel they are all good, my choices still are the Pure Protein Bars and the Quest Bars. Protein is important, but a low amount of carbs and sugar is even more important when you are a diabetic. You can make your own decision on which ones you would like but they are all healthy and good for you to help with snacks and even meal replacements! Always remember to let your physician know what you’re doing.

  2. These snack bars seem a great way to increase your daily protein intake. The first one is great because the sugar content is very low and I’m also happy that they are GLUTEN free.

    I think I will try the extend bar, lovinuthing peanut butter and with it being packed with vitamins and zero sugar you can’t really go wrong.

      Protein bars can be really good but when you have diabetes, you want to make sure there’s little to no sugar or carbs in these protein bars.

      That’s why I listed the best 5 protein bars that are good for diabetics. If you have celiac disease then the “One” bars are for you.

      The others are good too but my favorites are the Pure Protein and Quest Bars. They taste great and have very little carbs and sugar in them.

      These are great fro appetite suppressants and curbing your hunger pains.

  4. Are these listed protein bars specifically made for diabetic patients or are they just a make shift snak because of their low sugar and calorie level. I have seen and heard diabetics condemn all forms of chocolate as harmful therefore it is now surprising to read of chocolate meant for them.

    I understand the need for energy without having to get our stomach filled with food and over burden our digestive system, such could be gotten from fruits and vegetables.  Adding chocolates to that list would be really níce as it would spice up the diabetics menu.

    1. These are protein bars but are specifically better for diabetics because of their low carb and sugar content.

      The fact that they are low in calories helps too because of losing weight and that’s a huge factor in controlling diabetes.

      These protein bars are excellent and should by no means be substituted for any healthy meals. They shouldn’t be eaten in numbers at a time.

      They provide protein and the essentials with much less sugar and carbs. Those are the two ingredients that diabetics do not need.

      These are protein bars and the reason I state that they are for diabetics is because they are low in carbs and sugars.

      There seem to be many protein bars on the market today but some have way too much sugar and carbohydrates.

      Some really taste horrible as well and it’s hard to find a protein bar that is good for you if you have diabetes and also tastes good.

      Pure Protein is my favorite but I do like the Quest bars too!

First off as a nutritionist I have to say I encourage people to avoid most processed snack bars as much as possible and opt for a natural high fibre high starch diet that will satiate hunger and maintain glycaemic levels. I also focus on glycaemic load rather than glycaemic index so looking quantity as well as quality of carbohydrate. However the caveat to that of course is that with the busy lifestyle that most of us have there is a place for bars such as these and as you have pointed out much better to have low sugar content and quality ingredients. We actually have the pure protein bars here in Spain and I agree they are pretty good. A 20g serving of protein is more than adequate as well in one serving so more than happy to endorse your recommendation, Thanks for the review!

      As a nutritionist you are aware of what’s good and what isn’t for us as diabetics.

      I agree about concentrating more on the glycemic load than the glycemic index, but they are both important.

      There are other protein bars such as granola bars that may be better for you, but let’s face it, they taste horrible!

      So it’s best to stick with these protein bars because they taste good and are low in sugar and carbs which is what you want with having diabetes!

I think one of the best is the One Protein Bar with only 1 gram of sugar and the benefits of 20 grams of protein. The second place is for Quest Protein Bars with 1-3 grams of sugar and 20-21 grams of protein. I am sharing this post with some diabetic friends. Thank you 😊

      These are all great bars, but nutritional in value because they do contain a good deal of protein but little amounts of carbs and sugars.

  8. What an extremely useful and informational article. I feel like half of my family suffers from diabetes and it definitely runs in the family. This info makes quick snacks or on the go snacks so much simpler for diabetics. I know a nutritionally complete meal is difficult to find let alone a complete protein bar.       Because I have type 2 diabetes, I want to help others who have it. It’s hard when you have to narrow down your food intake.

      So I did extensive research on protein bars and found that these 5 are the best out there as far as I’m concerned.

      But I picked these because they have the least amounts of sugar and carbohydrates which is the best for diabetics.

      So they are excellent protein bars and especially for folks with type 2 diabetes.

  11. Even though I’m not diabetic, I love the Pure Protein bars! Not only are they extremely low in sugar, they’re actually delicious and I do notice that they give me a boost of energy. I usually eat one in the morning before work since I’m not much of a big breakfast person (I especially love the salted caramel flavored one) and the energy a single bar gives me often lasts me til the end of my shift at work.

    Since the others are included on this list, I’ll have to give them a try so I know what else to try just in case I can’t find the Pure Protein bars! Thanks so much!

      The first time I tried the Pure Protein bars I was amazed. I knew what the granola bars tasted like and yuck!

      But all of these bars taste great and provide protein with low sugar, low carbs, and few calories.

      The Pure Protein are my favorite because I love chocolate and the caramels are the best.

So my friend with diabetes eats the most horrible snacks I’ve ever seen for someone with diabetes.  She is always telling me she keeps them for when her sugar gets too low, but I’m really not picking up what she’s putting down.  I feel like she is “sneaking” these horrible treats behind her doctor’s back, and using the “oh my sugar gets too low” excuse because she craves the sugary snacks.  I’m thinking if I can get her a box of these, something that provides protein and has very little sugar, this might curb her cravings while not hurting her body.  I love going through your site because I love my friend so much and would like her to stick around a while.

This bars are very healthy and I would use them as a meal replacement while workout.   15. I’m gonna have to look into those pure protein bars! Although sugar is nice and all, it’s just not necessary adding so much of it in. Like a protein shake, you don’t drink it for pleasure (as least I don’t), you drink it for the protein and nutrients. Also that 20 grams is right up my alley, thanks for the informational list, it can be hard to tell which protein bars are actually going to taste good.

  18. I think the main reason that you should look for protein bars with 20 -30 percent protein in them is so that they fill you up and you aren’t tempted to snack on other unhealthy and fattening foods.

    However, it is very difficult to find protein bars that have hardly any sugar in them. A lot of them have a lot of sugar. Thank you for pointing out these protein bars for diabetics. At least you know that the sugar in these bars will be limited, as diabetics shouldn’t eat a lot of sugar.

    I am curious to know what the fiber content in these bars is?

I think that milk chocolate would be a problem–naturally, because of the milk in the chocolate. But I’m wondering about bars like the ones that you suggest, if they’re not of the chocolate variety but if they’re peanut butter. What’s your thought on that? Is there still some chocolate in them that I would have to be concerned about? 

    Thanks again for your reviews of these snacks, something that I’m longing for, right about now. And thanks for your thoughts on what the lactose intolerant might be able to handle.

      You’re welcome! Sorry to hear that you are lactose intolerant. Yes milk chocolate would be a problem.

      The problem there is that even though some bars have peanut butter, they all still contain milk and chocolate so that would still be an issue for you.

      Unless you can find a protein bar without chocolate, I’m afraid you’re out of luck 🙁

      I’m not a doctor so I couldn’t honestly tell you how the milk in the chocolate might affect you.

  21. I’m always a bit wary of health bars etc., but you seem to have found some excellent choices for diabetics as long as the recorded ingredients are correct. We all want to cut down on our sugar levels and the compromise is bound to be taste, but if you are serious you will take that with a grain of salt. People who complain about the taste are the same people who are overweight and sometimes it is the out they are looking for. This is a great post and if you are serious about your health is worthwhile looking at. Thanks for this

      I agree about some of the protein bars out there especially granola bars. I never cared for them.

      But as a diabetic these are the best protein bars for diabetics that I have found.

      They all taste good, provide protein, and are low in carbs, sugar, and calories.

      The fiber they contain help to give you that full feeling so they are a perfect snack!

My husband is not a diabetic, but at his last visit to the doctor his blood sugar was a bit high, and he needs to lose weight.  He doesn’t eat breakfast, but needs to start, and I’m trying to find him something that will be easy to eat without a lot of sugar and carbs.  The bars you listed all look great, but I like your 2 top choices.  I’m going to buy some of both of these and hope he’ll find something that will work for him!

      I think that once you see your blood sugar heading toward a higher level, you begin to take notice.

      Breakfast is of course the most important meal of the day and shouldn’t be skipped. 

      The protein bars are great for diabetics. And I love the Pure Protein bars and the Quest bars!

      These are great even for folks who aren’t diabetic.

  23. Lots of valuable information and content on this page. I think you gave a bunch of valuable advice. I have never tried these protein bars, because I’m not a huge fan of protein bars to be honest. I feel like a lot of them have a weird taste that I just don’t enjoy.

    I do not suffer from diabetes myself, but I have family that do. Diabetes is a rapid growing disease in the US and any information or reviews on products that help people is good in my book.

      Thanks! Sometimes it’s tough for diabetics or people looking to watch their sugar intake to find something that can take the edge off.

      I do agree that a good many protein bars do not taste good. But after research and testing these protein bars myself, I found that they all taste good.

      They also offer nutrition as far as protein, fiber, and are low in calories, carbs, and sugar.

      I love chocolate and these provide that for me without raising my blood sugars.

  24. Wow, what great protein bar choices! We are not diabetics in our family but still try to eat right and these all look yummy, especially the first one! My son is just been given the go by his doctor to resume his active life after his surgery. He has put on a little weight from being inactive and not surfing. So these will make a great snack for him! Great review!

    1. I have to tell you that these protein bars are excellent whether you are a diabetic or not!
      If you’re a chocolate lover like I am, then these are perfect because they only have 3 grams of sugar and they taste awesome!
      I hope that your son is recovering fine and that he will enjoy the protein bars!
      These have taken over for me as my number one snack!
